Welsh Heritage Initiative Competition – Year 1 Success!
In March 2025, our Year 1 pupils proudly entered the Welsh Heritage Initiative Competition, showcasing their fantastic learning from the topic Gwlad Gwlad.
Their big inquiry question was: “Do we live in a land of art?”
To investigate this, the children explored a wide range of Welsh heritage and culture, including:
Our local communities of Cwmdare and Aberdare
Inspirational Welsh artists such as Rhiannon Roberts, Christopher Langley and Martyn Evans
St David's Day and St Dwynwen's Day traditions
Traditional Welsh song and folk dance
The history of love spoons, with a special visit from Mr Barker
An exciting trip to Cardiff Castle
Learning about Hen Galan, the Perllan, and Mari Lwyd
After their brilliant investigations, the children concluded with pride that Wales truly IS a land of art!
Their work was presented to a judge from the initiative, and we were delighted to be invited to the award ceremony in July 2025—where Year 1 won £450!
We are incredibly proud of our young learners for representing our school and Welsh heritage so wonderfully. Bendigedig, Year 1! 🏆🎨🐉
