SIARTER IAITH CYMRAEG - WELSH LANGUAGE CHARTER.
The Welsh Charter Background and context
The Welsh government aims to have a million Welsh speakers by 2050. The Siarter Iaith is a Welsh Government strategy to target the use of Welsh in schools across Wales. The aim of Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus is to promote the use of Welsh in English-medium schools, establishing a Welsh ethos and encouraging pupils and staff to develop their Welsh language skills. The Charter provides a framework for schools to follow in order to achieve the awards. There are three levels of award; Bronze, Silver and Gold.
All schools, will work within the same framework to achieve the aim of ensuring that learners:
● are confident in using their Welsh language skills
● foster positive attitudes towards the language
● increase the use of the language inside and outside the school
At Cwmdar Primary School we have a Criw Cymraeg made up of pupils across year 2-year 6, they are supported by Mrs Gardiner. Their role is to lead the charter and promote Welsh with their peers on a daily basis. In October 2023 they set three Criw Cymreag targets in the Autumn term 2023. They were ‘tickled pink’ to achieve these and set new targets for Spring/Summer 2024.
